Watching old movies, or reading science fiction, can tell you a lot about how people thought about their world. Anyone who has ever seen The Empire Strikes back knows what people used to think of when they thought of life in the clouds. The only way they thought people could live that high in the air was if technology advanced to space age levels, allowing development at the zero gravity level. Today, a look at Toronto condos and those in New York zip codes show that they were right about the technology part, but wrong about the shape life in the clouds would take.
The fact is living in the clouds is common in big cities all over the world today, thanks not to advances in physics technology but rather in engineering. Which really boils down to the same thing I guess, but that doesn't really matter when it comes to Kitchener condo apartments for sale or those in New York. The point is that we have advanced to the point where some people can live at elevations where cloud cover is routine most of the year, far higher up than we could have imagined before.
This type of development is largely only available in big cities, for several reasons. Sure you will see a nice Mississauga condominium or two in that medium sized city, and other cities like it. But you will never see anything there to rival the skyscrapers that rise against the skyline the way they do in Toronto, New York, and Tokyo. The first reason for the massive developments in those areas is lack of land. As the available land was used up in suburban sprawl, city planners and developers had to be innovative with what they put up next. The answer was to build up instead of out, and they keep building higher and higher up.
The second reason for these huge developments in large cities is the sheer cost. Smaller cities just can't support big condo developments like large ones. Look around Brampton real estate, and you will see a good share of nice condo buildings. There are people with a lot of money in medium cities, just not as many people with a lot of money. The wealth of big cities, and the number of citizens who have a lot of wealth, means that big developments are cost effective.
Of course, that is not great news for anyone looking to buy a condo at cloud level without a lot of money. A typical penthouse suite at the top in Yorkville Toronto and other dense neighborhoods will cost a person in the millions of dollars to buy. Just more evidence that one has indeed reached the top.
